Protect Yourself Online
Purchasing things online has become easier, from gifts & home goods to food! But what happens when something you ordered shows up different than advertised, damaged or never shows up at all?
Scammers often pose as a real company online, or make up fake companies to try and get your personal information or money. They may post fake ads on social media or other websites, and even use real companies logos to try to look legitimate. But, then take your money and do not send you what you ordered.
Here are some ways to better protect yourself when shopping online:
Pay with a credit card: If you’re charged more than once, billed for something you never received, or get a wrong or damaged item, you can dispute the charge with your credit card company.
Check out the company: Before you make the purchase, search online for the company’s name along with words such as “scam” or “fraud” to see what issues others may have had with the company.
Keep records: Keep track of the company’s name and website, save receipts and bank statements showing what you paid, and when the item was supposed to be shipped. (Sellers should ship your order by the time they state in ad, or give you the chance to get your money back.)
